Bonaire
Nestled in the southern Caribbean alongside Aruba and Curaçao, Bonaire forms part of the celebrated ABC Islands trio. Bonaire is a quiet Caribbean island known for its natural beauty and relaxed pace. Before going, I didn’t know anything about this serene island. It’s a special municipality of the Netherlands, blending Dutch influence with Caribbean culture. The island is world-famous for its diving and snorkeling, with protected reefs easily accessible right from shore.
Rather than a loud nightlife or big resorts, Bonaire focuses on a quiet, nature-driven experience. The island features desert-like landscapes, flamingos, salt flats, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. If you are looking for some fun spots at night, I do have a list to offer.
It’s ideal for nature lovers, divers, and travelers seeking a peaceful, outdoorsy escape with a slow, restorative vibe.
What To Do
An island tour to explore Bonaire’s culture and landscapes at the beginning of your trip is a fun way to see the entire island. Along the way, have your guide stop at the Cadushy Distillery where you can taste Cactus Liqueur.
A visit to the lighthouse offers scenic views, while adventurous activities like land sailing and windsurfing highlight the island’s active side.
Nature lovers can explore the Caribbean Bird Trail to spot colorful native and migratory birds, or spend time in Washington Slagbaai National Park, where rugged terrain, coastal vistas, and unique wildlife await.
For a more relaxed experience, beachside dining lets you enjoy local cuisine alongside beach games and loungers where the kids will have more than enough entertainment.
End your day with a sunset dinner cruise which will provide breathtaking views of Bonaire’s coastline in a serene, unforgettable setting.
When To Visit
The most ideal time to visit Bonaire is December - April. This period offers ideal weather conditions with warm, sunny days and minimal rainfall, making it perfect for diving, snorkeling, and other outdoor activities.
The great thing about the ABC islands is that they sit outside of the hurricane belt so there are no months you have to avoid.
Is now the time I tell you that I’d highly recommend you pair this island with Curaçao? They are so close and they’d offer you two different experiences while allowing you to still enjoy island life. Go from a quiet, nature-focused, and outdoorsy island to a more colorful, culturally rich and lively island.
How To Get Here
Some airlines fly direct into Bonaire. While other airlines fly direct into Curaçao and then you take a 20 minute flight to Bonaire. This 20 minute flight was the first time I experienced being able to see the pilot fly the plane. You also get real up close and personal with the other 14 people on board.
You will need a valid passport to enter Bonaire.
