Italy
Italy is a country where multi-generational gatherings are the norm, where grandmothers still roll pasta by hand, and where children are greeted with genuine affection by strangers in cafés. Italian culture is loud, warm, and unapologetically social, and kids thrive in that energy. There's no such thing as a quiet Italian piazza at sunset, there are children kicking soccer balls, teenagers on vespas, families sharing antipasti at outdoor tables. Italy doesn't ask you to tone it down or keep things orderly. It invites you to join the beautiful chaos.
What makes Italy so compelling with families is how much texture it holds. You're never doing just one thing; you're layering history, food, landscape, and art into every single day. A morning might start with exploring Roman ruins, shift into making fresh mozzarella at a farm, and end with swimming off rocky cliffs while the sun turns the water gold. Italian towns spill down hillsides, sprawl along coastlines, and rise up around ancient forums, and each one feels like its own little world. The Dolomites offer hiking and alpine lakes. The Amalfi Coast delivers drama and limoncello. Tuscany rolls out vineyards and medieval towers. And the islands; Sicily & Sardinia offer beaches, temples, and a slower pace that feels like a different country altogether.
What I keep coming back to with Italy is how sensory it is. The smell of focaccia baking, the sound of church bells at noon, the feel of cool marble underfoot in a cathedral, the taste of gelato that's somehow better than anywhere else. Kids pick up on that. They remember the things they touched, tasted, and experienced, not just the things they saw. Italy gives families permission to be present, to indulge a little, to let the day unfold without a rigid plan. It's a country that reminds you why you travel in the first place—not to check off a list, but to feel fully alive. This is a place my kids constantly ask to visit and I need to make it a priority because it’s incredible!
